A Land of Savannas and Horses
Eastern Sumba feels very different from the tropical Indonesia most travellers know. Dry savannas, rolling hills and golden grass dominate the landscape, while horses remain an important part of life on the island. These open landscapes are especially striking in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon.
Sumba After Sunset
Some of Sumba’s most beautiful scenes appear in the evening. At low tide, the shallow water along the coast turns into a mirror, while small mangrove trees become delicate silhouettes against the sunset. It is one of those rare landscapes that feels both simple and almost unreal.
Houses Reaching for the Sky
Traditional Sumbanese villages are instantly recognisable by their tall thatched roofs rising high above the settlements. The architecture reflects local beliefs as much as climate and daily life, with the house connecting the world of people, ancestors and spirits. Massive stone tombs still form part of the village landscape.
Water Among Rocks and Jungle
Despite the dry savannas of the east, other parts of Sumba reveal a completely different side of the island: freshwater lagoons, cascading waterfalls and natural pools surrounded by dense tropical greenery. The contrast between dry hills, jungle and vivid blue water makes Sumba unexpectedly diverse.
